Statistical classics in the big data era.
When (astro)physical data are small


In this talk I will try and reflect on whether, and to what extend, some classical methods of statistical inference and modelling are topical in astronomical and astrophysical applications. The focus will be on modern likelihood based solutions, though competing alternatives based on Bayesian computation will be mentioned in by-passing. The discussion will develop along examples from particle physics and exoplanet detection.
